How to Buy a Real Registered Driver's License
Over the decades, the law enforcement community has tried a variety ways to stop fake IDs. Holograms, dual images bar-coding, watermarks, and bar-coding have all been employed but they can also be defeated by sophisticated counterfeiters.
Two proofs of New York State residence are required to get a REAL or enhanced ID. Examples include your current driver's license or non-driver ID, utility bill or bank statement, or a pay stub.
Real Documents Unit
The Real Documents Unit processes and renews licenses for those who are not eligible to receive a driver's ID card or non-driver identification card because of medical ailments. This process involves examining the medical records of an individual and determining if they are safe to drive a car. If not, the license for that person could be suspended or revoked.
A person is deemed to have a medical condition that limits their driving abilities when the nurse or doctor treating them submits a report indicating that they are unable to safely drive or are not planning to drive again. The report is then used by the DMV to restrict the driver's license or to suspend or revoke the ability of a driver to drive.
You must present authentic documents that prove your identity and address in order to get a driver's licence that is registered. Those documents must be official and current. You can use an utility bill or a bank statement to prove your current address. A copy of your Social Security card can also be used to verify your identity and address. Acceptable is a letter from your doctor stating that you are not able to drive or do not intend to drive.

Once your application has been completed, you can visit any Secretary State Driver Services facility for your photo and any tests required. After your documents have been reviewed and verified you will receive a brand new permanent standard ID card or DL card via mail within 15 working days.
Real Driver's Licenses
The Real Driver's Licenses is a new form of identification that is in compliance with the federal Real ID Act. The act set minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses permits, ID cards, and permits and forbids federal agencies like the Transportation Security Administration from accepting any card that doesn't meet these standards. In October 2017, the DMV began the process of releasing Real IDs, which look different from standard driver's licenses and have an image of a star on them. The enhanced ID also has RFID chips, which authorities can read electronically from as far as 30 feet away from an inspection booth at the border. The IDs come with a barcode and machine-readable area, which authorities can manually read if the RFID chips are not working.
For travel within the United States, those who don't want to purchase a Real ID can use their current license or one that is expired. However, if they plan to fly or enter a federal facility, they will need another form of government-accepted ID, like a passport or military identification. A passport can be purchased at their local post office at a cost less than that of a Real ID issued by the DMV.
If you decide to apply for an enhanced or Real ID, you will need to visit the DMV to apply. This is because you cannot obtain them via the internet, over the phone, or mail. You must bring the following documents to your local DMV: proof of identity like a driver's license, birth certificate or passport; evidence of Social Security number or Social Security number ineligibility and proof of birth date; and two different evidences of New York state residency. You must also have a valid photograph.

It is important to know that a New York enhanced or Real ID is more expensive than your standard driver's license. This is because of the additional security features and the appearance. A new law has been passed to waive fees associated with transactions for those who have an authentic or enhanced ID. However, this law is not yet in place. Plan accordingly for the future. If you travel often it is worthwhile to get a Real ID or enhanced ID. This is especially important if you are planning to fly within the United States. You will feel more secure at airports and at your destination due to the additional security features.
Real Identification
You will need to provide the following documents to obtain a valid driver's license. These documents will be scanned and verified by the department. You will also have to pass a driving test and an investigation into your background. If you fail these tests, your license could be suspended. In some cases you may be required to provide additional evidence. For example, if you have recently changed gender, you will have to submit an order from a court confirming the change in your gender marker or an official letter from the surgeon who performed your gender change.
In general, those applying for a new ID card or license will have to submit two proofs of residency in the state, a photograph, and the application fee. The Department of Homeland Security has set minimum standards that states must meet to obtain their licenses and identification cards.
